In honor of Throwback Thursday today, I thought it might be fun to explore home trends and styles throughout the decades. Some will make you cringe, some will make you laugh, and others will make you head to the store in order to bring them back! What is your favorite “home” decade? 1940’s: -Colors: Exotic pastels, metallic undertones, neutrals, navy blue, red, yellow, and light green -Flooring: Monotone carpet or patterned, bold colored linoleum -Appliances: White -Miscellaneous: Lace and silk, white bathrooms, old architecture, gingham print, rooster/chicken décor, floral print, cherry or apple kitchens, and patterned walls 1950’s: -Colors: Pastels- baby pink, turquoise, mint green, pale yellow, and powder blue -Flooring: Colored or patterned linoleum floors with patterned rugs or knotty pine floors -Appliances: White or pastel colored -Miscellaneous: Formica countertops, maple furniture, plaid fabric, ranch style, sleek lines, brick fireplaces, colonial style molding, cape codes, and 1-story homes 1960’s: -Colors: Psychedelic and Nature Hues- orange, yellow, green, gold, and neon colors -Flooring: No wax floors or vinyl floor tiles with patterns -Appliances: Coppertone or turquoise -Miscellaneous: Unusual and bright furniture, bean bags, wood paneling, popcorn ceilings, in-home storage, paisley and floral-patterned wallpaper, ranch style, and split-level homes 1970’s: -Colors: Earthy tones- brown, bright green, avocado green, orange, gold, poppy red, and multi-color -Flooring: Shag carpeting, carpeting throughout the entire home (including the bathroom!), linoleum floors or hardwood -Appliances: Earthy colors with black or stainless-steel trim -Miscellaneous: Wicker, plastic, and white furniture, popcorn ceilings, a lot of house plants, laminate countertops, foil wallpaper, chrome, and glass 1980’s: -Colors: Almond, grey, gold, black, wheat, green, teal, dusty mauve, peach hunter green, maroon, and salmon -Flooring: Laminate flooring, carpet, or tile -Appliances: Bone, ivory, almond, black, or white -Miscellaneous: Frosted glass, decorative borders, larger homes, mirrored walls, floral or quilt bedding, ruffles in the décor (throw pillows and curtains), over-sized art, 2- story homes, faux wood paneling, faux finishes, baskets, metal lamps, rattan furniture, copper pots, and pastel and stripped wallpaper 1990’s: -Colors: Monotone- beige, rose, blue, white, and hunter green -Flooring: Hard surfaces, light wood, knotty pine, and vinyl floors -Appliances: White, Black, and Stainless Steel -Miscellaneous: Vaulted ceilings, large sofas, open space, master suites, walk-in closet, kitchen island, floral wallpaper, larger homes, animal print fabrics, velvet and velour, white kitchens, brass and bronze metal, country accents, and 2-story homes 2000’s: -Colors: Warm greys, neutrals, aqua, red, coral, and lavender -Flooring: Hardwood, ceramic tiles, bamboo, and stone -Appliances: Stainless steel and brushed nickel -Miscellaneous: Green movement started, sustainable materials, smaller homes, maple and white kitchens, granite, low profile televisions, classic furniture, black-out drapery, oil rubbed bronze accessories, area rugs, granite, technology, and lighting design Contact Francia Dennis, REALTOR® with HomeSmart Elite Group, today! *Please note this list is not all inclusive.
